چکیده

Scientists often re-invent things which were long known. Here we review these activities as related to the mechanism of producing power law distributions, originally proposed in 1922 by Yule to explain experimental data on the sizes of biological genera, collected by Willis. We estimate that scientists are busy re-discovering America about 2/3 of time.  The book of Ecclesiastes says: “Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already of old time, which was before us.” The job of the scientists is to discover new things, thus they are the most affected. In this paper we report a case study involving the mechanism of generating power-law distributions known as Yule’s process, Simon’s model, Cumulative Advantage, or Preferential Attachment. We also discuss the relation of Yule’s process to GaltonWatson process and to Self-Organized Criticality.

Mutual benefits for

Knowledge Management and AI & Law are two areas of research with overlapping topics. At present, these areas are infrequently investigated together. In this paper it is argued that addressing these areas together would be for their mutual benefit and progress. It could prevent re-inventing the wheel on both sides.

Characteristics of Ion Transport in Kidney Cortex of Mammalian Hibernators

Recent studies have demonstrated resistance of membrane function to cold in several tissues of hibernating mammals. Thus, in hamsters or ground squirrels excitability of nerves (Chatfield et al., 1948; Kehl and Morrison, 1960) and cardiac muscle (see Marshall and Willis, 1962) is maintained at low temperatures, the resting membrane potential of atrial fibers is virtually unchanged by temperatur...
